Muzzle loading cannon come as either smooth-bore or rifled. We choose to list the smooth-bore cannon by the weight (in pounds) of their solid shot. Rifled cannon are listed by their bore diameter. Those rifles made during the transition period, especially Parrotts, have included their equivalent shot weight. Parrotts usually have the shot weight stamped into the trunnion end, and size stamped into their muzzle face.

Many U.S. muzzle-loaded cannon were converted to breech-loading during the later part of the 1800's and are listed here. Those U.S. breech-loaders that were produced as experimental during the Civil War era can be found here.

This section includes black-powder mortars.
